Description | FictionBook is an open XML-based e-book format which originated and gained popularity in Russia. FictionBook files have the .fb2 filename extension. The FictionBook format does not specify the appearance of a document; instead, it describes its structure. For example, there are special tags for epigraphs, verses and quotations. | The LRF file type is a proprietary file type created by Sony for use with Sony branded eBook readers. LRF, along with LRS and LRX made up the now defunct BroadBand eBook or BBeB. The file type was discontinued in 2010 with the Sony eBook store selling in the ePUB format. |
Technical details | In contrast to other eBook formats (e.g. ePub), a FictionBook document consists of a single XML file. Images are converted to Base64 and reside inside the <binary> tag, so the size of the embedded images is increased by approximately 37%. FictionBook files are often distributed inside Zip archives. | LRF files are compressed, unencrypted files that may contain text and images featuring Sony's DRM protection. An LRF file may contain one or many LRS files which contain XML structuring. |
