Information about IGS and OBJ file formats

Full name Initial Graphics Exchange Specification OBJ geometry format
File extension .igs .obj
MIME type application/iges text/plain
Developed by Integrated Computer Aided Manufacturing (ICAM) Wavefront Technologies
Type of format
Description The Initial Graphics Exchange Specification (IGS) is a vendor-neutral file format that allows the digital exchange of information among computer-aided design (CAD) systems. Using IGS, a CAD user can exchange product data models in the form of circuit diagrams, wireframe, freeform surface or solid modeling representations. Applications supported by IGS include traditional engineering drawings, models for analysis, and other manufacturing functions. OBJ (or .obj) is a geometry definition file format first developed by Wavefront Technologies for its Advanced Visualizer animation package. The file format is open and has been adopted by other 3D graphics application vendors.
Technical details The chief advantage of IGS is that it is unencumbered by licensing, i.e. it’s free. Which is probably why it’s still everywhere after all these years. But all meaningful development of IGS stopped in 1996 at version 5.3. It’s likely time to leave IGS behind for good. Especially in light of continued evolution of STEP. The OBJ file format is a simple data-format that represents 3D geometry alone — namely, the position of each vertex, the UV position of each texture coordinate vertex, vertex normals, and the faces that make each polygon defined as a list of vertices, and texture vertices. Vertices are stored in a counter-clockwise order by default, making explicit declaration of face normals unnecessary. OBJ coordinates have no units, but OBJ files can contain scale information in a human readable comment line.
