|Description||The Portable Document Format (PDF) is a file format used to present documents in a manner independent of application software, hardware, and operating systems. Each PDF file encapsulates a complete description of a fixed-layout flat document, including the text, fonts, graphics, and other information needed to display it.||Developed by Microsoft, the .wmf format is a proprietary graphics file type. WMF was first designed to act as a format that allowed vector graphics to be converted to bitmap images and vice versa. The WMF acted as a bridge file, enabling compatibility between the two formats. As new platform independent image formats such as JPEG were developed the need for bridging files such as WMF was removed. The most well known use of the file type is for the early incarnations of clip art that were bundled with Microsoft Office.|
|Technical details||The PDF combines three technologies: A subset of the PostScript page description programming language, for generating the layout and graphics. A font-embedding/replacement system to allow fonts to travel with the documents. A structured storage system to bundle these elements and any associated content into a single file, with data compression where appropriate.||A .wmf file may contain both vector graphics and bitmap images to enable portability between two incompatible platforms. The file contains a list of instructions that allows the graphics device to understand how to render the file. It is a 16 bit file.|
