Information about XLS and ZIP file formats

Name XLS ZIP
Full name XLS - Microsoft Excel Binary File Format ZIP - ZIP Archive
File extension .xls .zip, .zipx
MIME type application/vnd.ms-excel application/zip
Developed by Microsoft Phil Katz, PKWARE, Inc.
Type of format Spreadsheet Data compression
Description Microsoft Excel up until 2007 version used a proprietary binary file format called Excel Binary File Format (.XLS) as its primary format. Excel 2007 uses Office Open XML as its primary file format, an XML-based format that followed after a previous XML-based format called "XML Spreadsheet". ZIP is an archive file format that supports lossless data compression. A .ZIP file may contain one or more files or directories that may have been compressed. The .ZIP file format permits a number of compression algorithms, though DEFLATE is the most common.
Technical details OpenOffice.org has created documentation of the Excel format. Since then Microsoft made the Excel binary format specification available to freely download. ZIP files are archives that store multiple files. .ZIP allows contained files to be compressed using many different methods, as well as simply storing a file without compressing it. Each file is stored separately, allowing different files in the same archive to be compressed using different methods.
