Information about DNG and PNG file formats

🔸 File format DNG PNG
🔸 Full name DNG - Digital Negative PNG - Portable Network Graphics
🔸 File extension .dng .png
🔸 MIME type image/x-adobe-dng image/png
🔸 Developed by Adobe Systems PNG Development Group
🔸 Type of format raw image format lossless bitmap image format
🔸 Description Digital Negative (DNG) is a patented, open lossless raw image format written by Adobe used for digital photography. Since the launch, all Adobe photo manipulation software (such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom) supports DNG. DNG is based on the TIFF/EP standard format and mandates effective use of metadata. The use of the file format is royalty-free. Portable Network Graphics (PNG) is a raster graphics file format that supports lossless data compression. PNG was created as an improved, non-patented replacement for Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) and is the most used lossless image compression format on the Internet. However, PNG itself does not support animation at all. MNG is an extension to PNG that does. Members of the PNG Group designed it.
🔸 Technical details A DNG file always contains data for one main image, plus metadata, and optionally contains at least one JPEG preview. It usually has the extension "dng" or "DNG". DNG conforms to TIFF/EP and is structured according to TIFF. DNG supports various metadata formats (including Exif metadata, XMP metadata, IPTC metadata) and specifies a set of mandated metadata. PNG supports palette-based images (with palettes of 24-bit RGB or 32-bit RGBA colors), grayscale images (with or without alpha channel), and full-color non-palette-based RGB[A] images (with or without alpha channel). However, PNG was designed for transferring images on the Internet, not for professional-quality print graphics, and therefore does not support non-RGB color spaces such as CMYK.
