Information about WEBM and PNG file formats

🔸 File format WEBM PNG
🔸 Full name WEBM - HTML5 video PNG - Portable Network Graphics
🔸 File extension .webm .png
🔸 MIME type video/webm, audio/webm image/png
🔸 Developed by Google PNG Development Group
🔸 Type of format video file format lossless bitmap image format
🔸 Description WebM is a video file format. It is primarily intended to offer a royalty-free alternative to use in the HTML5 video tag. It has a sister project, WebP, for images. Google sponsors the development of the format, and the corresponding software is distributed under a BSD license. Portable Network Graphics (PNG) is a raster graphics file format that supports lossless data compression. PNG was created as an improved, non-patented replacement for Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) and is the most used lossless image compression format on the Internet. However, PNG itself does not support animation at all. MNG is an extension to PNG that does. Members of the PNG Group designed it.
🔸 Technical details The WebM container is based on a profile of Matroska. WebM initially supported VP8 video and Vorbis audio streams. In 2013 it was updated to accommodate VP9 video and Opus audio. PNG supports palette-based images (with palettes of 24-bit RGB or 32-bit RGBA colors), grayscale images (with or without alpha channel), and full-color non-palette-based RGB[A] images (with or without alpha channel). However, PNG was designed for transferring images on the Internet, not for professional-quality print graphics, and therefore does not support non-RGB color spaces such as CMYK.
