Information about JP2 and PNG file formats

🔸 File format JP2 PNG
🔸 Full name JP2, JPEG 2000 Core Image File PNG - Portable Network Graphics
🔸 File extension .jp2 .png
🔸 MIME type image/jp2 image/png
🔸 Developed by Joint Photographic Experts Group PNG Development Group
🔸 Type of format Raster image lossless bitmap image format
🔸 Description As an image compression algorithm created as an advancement to its predecessor JPEG, the JP2 uses an entirely different approach towards image compression. It enables the user to save the image with different parts having other image quality. Portable Network Graphics (PNG) is a raster graphics file format that supports lossless data compression. PNG was created as an improved, non-patented replacement for Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) and is the most used lossless image compression format on the Internet. However, PNG itself does not support animation at all. MNG is an extension to PNG that does. Members of the PNG Group designed it.
🔸 Technical details JP2 is an image file compression algorithm that uses a wavelet compression algorithm. It was developed to supersede the existing JPEG standards. The algorithm uses an 'area of interest' based approach and thus makes it possible to save parts of the image in different quality. PNG supports palette-based images (with palettes of 24-bit RGB or 32-bit RGBA colors), grayscale images (with or without alpha channel), and full-color non-palette-based RGB[A] images (with or without alpha channel). However, PNG was designed for transferring images on the Internet, not for professional-quality print graphics, and therefore does not support non-RGB color spaces such as CMYK.
