Information about PCT and JPG file formats
|Full name||PCT, Apple Macintosh QuickDraw Image||JPG - Joint Photographic Experts Group|
|File extension||.pct||.jpg, .jpeg, .jpe|
|Developed by||Apple||Joint Photographic Experts Group|
|Type of format||Raster image||lossy image format|
|Description||PCT files are created using the Apple QuickDraw program. Storing images in a raster as well as vector format is supported by PCT files. However, unless you are using a Windows computer, you may never see Apple QuickDraw images saved in this format. The most commonly used extension for these images when using a Macintosh computer is PICT.||JPG is a commonly used method of lossy compression for digital images, particularly for those images produced by digital photography. The degree of compression can be adjusted, allowing a selectable tradeoff between storage size and image quality. JPG typically achieves 10:1 compression with little perceptible loss in image quality.|
|Technical details||PCT files have the same specifications as PICT files have, with the difference that they are typically used on Microsoft Windows computers. With the adaptation of PDF by Mac OS X, the PCT and PICT format have been deprecated.||Image files that employ JPG compression are commonly called "JPG files", and are stored in variants of the JIF image format. Most image capture devices (such as digital cameras) that output JPG are actually creating files in the Exif format, the format that the camera industry has standardized on for metadata interchange.|
