Information about CDR and DXF file formats

Name CDR DXF
Full name CDR - CorelDraw File Format DXF - Drawing Interchange Format
File extension .cdr, .cdt .dxf
MIME type application/x-cdr image/vnd.dxf
Developed by Corel Corporation Autodesk
Type of format Vector graphics CAD
Description CorelDraw is a vector graphics editor developed and marketed by Corel Corporation of Ottawa, Canada. CorelDraw file formats include CDR, CorelDraw Compressed (CDX), CorelDraw Template (CDT) and Corel Presentation Exchange (CMX). AutoCAD DXF (Drawing Interchange Format, or Drawing Exchange Format) is a CAD data file format developed by Autodesk for enabling data interoperability between AutoCAD and other programs. Versions of AutoCAD from Release 10 and up support both ASCII and binary forms of DXF. Earlier versions support only ASCII.
Technical details The CDR file is a ZIP-compressed directory of several files, among them XML-files and the RIFF-structured riffdata.cdr with the familiar version signature in versions X4 (CDREvrsn) and X5 (CDRFvrsn), and a root.dat with Corel Draw X6, where the bytes 9 to 15 look slightly different. As AutoCAD has become more powerful, supporting more complex object types, DXF has become less useful. Certain object types, including ACIS solids and regions, are not documented. DXF coordinates are always without dimensions so that the reader or user needs to know the drawing unit or has to extract it from the textual comments in the sheets.
Associated programs Adobe Illustrator, Corel PaintShop Photo Pro, Corel WordPerfect Office, Inkscape, LibreOffice, Microsoft Visio. AutoCAD
