Full name DDS - Microsoft Direct Draw Surface BMP - Microsoft Windows bitmap
File extension .dds .bmp, .dib
MIME type image/vnd.ms-dds image/bmp, image/x-bmp
Developed by Microsoft Microsoft
Type of format texture files Raster graphics
Description The DirectDraw Surface container file format (uses the filename extension DDS), is a Microsoft format for storing data compressed with the proprietary S3 Texture Compression (S3TC) algorithm, which can be decompressed in hardware by GPUs. The BMP file format, also known as bitmap image file or device independent bitmap (DIB) file format or simply a bitmap, is a raster graphics image file format used to store bitmap digital images, independently of the display device, especially on Microsoft Windows and OS/2 operating systems.
Technical details The DirectDraw Surface format is useful for storing graphical textures and cubic environment maps as a data file, both compressed and uncompressed. The Microsoft Windows file extension for this data format is '.dds'. The bitmap image file consists of fixed-size structures as well as variable-size structures appearing in a predetermined sequence. Many different versions of some of these structures can appear in the file, due to the long evolution of this file format.
