Information about DXF and PGM file formats

🔸 File format DXF PGM
🔸 Full name DXF - Drawing Interchange Format PGM, Portable Gray Map Image
🔸 File extension .dxf .pgm
🔸 MIME type image/vnd.dxf image/x-portable-graymap
🔸 Developed by Autodesk Jef Poskanzer
🔸 Type of format CAD Raster image
🔸 Description AutoCAD DXF (Drawing Interchange Format, or Drawing Exchange Format) is a CAD data file format developed by Autodesk for enabling data interoperability between AutoCAD and other programs. Versions of AutoCAD from Release 10 and up support both ASCII and binary forms of DXF. Earlier versions support only ASCII. PGM files are known as portable gray map files and contain grayscale image information. These files can be saved in two representations, either as plain (ASCII) text or binary. Which way the PGM is saved is apparent in the file header. If the header contains the string "P2", it is a text format. If it contains the string "P5", it's a binary representation. Binary PGM files can contain more than one image. This is not possible for the text-based PGM. It is limited to one image.
🔸 Technical details As AutoCAD has become more powerful, supporting more complex object types, DXF has become less useful. Certain object types, including ACIS solids and regions, are not documented. DXF coordinates are always without dimensions, so that the reader or user needs to know the drawing unit or has to extract it from the textual comments in the sheets. Portable Gray Map Images can be encoded using either one byte or two bytes per pixel, representing 8 or 16 bits. The file header contains different information, such as the width and height of the image and the maximum number of black and white shades. The information is stored in a grid format, consisting of different numbers. These numbers represent the grayscale shades of the image, ranging from black (0) to white (65.536).
