Information about GIF and WBMP file formats

Name GIF WBMP
Full name GIF - CompuServe Graphics Interchange Format Wireless Bitmap File Format
File extension .gif .wbmp
MIME type image/gif image/vnd.wap.wbmp

Type of format lossless bitmap image format Image File
Description The Graphics Interchange Format (better known by its acronym GIF) is a bitmap image format that was introduced by CompuServe in 1987 and has since come into widespread usage on the World Wide Web due to its wide support and portability. The WBMP file format is a now obsolete file type that was used by early mobile phones to exchange and store images. WBMP files are black and white only. The WBMP format was succeeded by the PNG format for use by WAP mobile phones as this provided colour support. A requirement for a WAP specific image format has been rendered increasingly unnecessary due to the advent of smartphones and their support of a range of image formats.
Technical details GIF supports up to 8 bits per pixel for each image, allowing a single image to reference its own palette of up to 256 different colors chosen from the 24-bit RGB color space. GIF images are compressed using the Lempel-Ziv-Welch (LZW) lossless data compression technique to reduce the file size without degrading the visual quality. A .WBMP file is saved in bit format. This means that each pixel represents 1 bit. Each pixel can be black or white. Each WBMP file is comprised of a type field, a header field, a width value, a height value and the data for the image itself.
