Information about DOC and PSD file formats

Name DOC PSD
Full name DOC - Microsoft Word Binary File Format PSD - Adobe Photoshop bitmap file
File extension .doc .psd
MIME type application/msword image/x-photoshop
Developed by Microsoft Adobe Systems
Type of format document file format Raster Image format
Description DOC is a filename extension for word processing documents, most commonly in the proprietary Microsoft Word Binary File Format. In Microsoft Word 2007 and later, the binary file format was replaced as the default format by the Office Open XML format, though Microsoft Word can still produce DOC files. Photoshop files have default file extension as .PSD, which stands for "Photoshop Document." A PSD file stores an image with support for most imaging options available in Photoshop. These include layers with masks, transparency, text, alpha channels and spot colors, clipping paths, and duotone settings.
Technical details Binary DOC files often contain more text formatting information (as well as scripts and undo information) than some other document file formats like Rich Text Format and HyperText Markup Language, but are usually less widely compatible. This is in contrast to many other file formats (e.g., .JPG or .GIF) that restrict content to provide streamlined, predictable functionality. A PSD file has a maximum height and width of 30,000 pixels, and a length limit of 2 Gigabytes.
