Description | DOTX files are, like DOT files, template files created by Microsoft's word processing programs. In these template files, information like layout and setting, different styles, AutoText, macros, and toolbars are included. By using a DOTX file, creating documents with the same formatting is made a lot easier. There are DOTX files already generated by the Microsoft Word program, but by altering the so called Normal.DOTX file, the users can create their very own template files for example for business letters or envelopes. | The Portable Document Format (PDF) is a file format used to present documents in a manner independent of application software, hardware, and operating systems. Each PDF file encapsulates a complete description of a fixed-layout flat document, including the text, fonts, graphics, and other information needed to display it. |
Technical details | In contrast to DOT files, files with the DOTX extension use the newer and higher developed XML-based document format of Microsoft Word which has been introduced to the Microsoft Office package in 2007. Thus, DOTX files can be opened by any version of Microsoft Word 2007 and newer, and older versions that support the Open XML component. DOTX files inherit the XML architecture alongside with ZIP compression to keep the file size relatively low. | The PDF combines three technologies: A subset of the PostScript page description programming language, for generating the layout and graphics. A font-embedding/replacement system to allow fonts to travel with the documents. A structured storage system to bundle these elements and any associated content into a single file, with data compression where appropriate. |
