Information about AZW3 and MP3 file formats
|Full name||Amazon KF8 eBook File||MP3 - MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 Audio Layer III|
|MIME type||application/octet-stream||audio/mpeg, audio/MPA, audio/mpa-robust|
|Developed by||Amazon||Fraunhofer Institute|
|Type of format||Digital audio|
|Description||AZW3 - Kindle Format 8 (KF8) is Amazon's newer version of AZW. It supports HTML5 and CSS3, which were not supported through the standard AZW format. In addition, it has several other formatting options and is used by Amazon for all new Amazon eBooks. It is supported by fourth-generation Kindle devices running firmware version 4.1.0 or later and the Kindle Fire device.||MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 Audio Layer III, more commonly referred to as MP3, is an audio coding format for digital audio that uses lossy data compression. It is a common audio format for consumer audio streaming or storage and a de facto standard of digital audio compression for the transfer and playback of music on most digital audio players.|
|Technical details||KF8 (also called AZW3) is essentially a compiled ePub that has utilizes a Palm database and Amazon's DRM scheme. It targets ePub 3 version support, but existing ePub can also be used. The internal format has been decoded using mobi_unpack. However, the basic format remains as a PDB file similar in structure to a MOBI. Thus, more often than not, a KF8 file will contain both a MOBI file at the beginning and the newer KF8 version of ePub later.||Lossy compression is designed to reduce significantly the amount of data required to represent the audio recording and still sound like a faithful reproduction of the original uncompressed audio. For example, an MP3 file created using the setting of 128 kbit/s will result in a file about 1/11 the size of the CD file created from the original audio source.|
