Information about BMP and CUR file formats

Name BMP CUR
Full name BMP - Microsoft Windows bitmap CUR - Microsoft Cursor Icon
File extension .bmp, .dib .cur
MIME type image/bmp, image/x-bmp
Developed by Microsoft Microsoft
Type of format Raster graphics Graphics file format for mouse cursors
Description The BMP file format, also known as bitmap image file or device independent bitmap (DIB) file format or simply a bitmap, is a raster graphics image file format used to store bitmap digital images, independently of the display device, especially on Microsoft Windows and OS/2 operating systems. The ICO file format is an image file format for computer icons in Microsoft Windows. The CUR file format is an almost identical image file format for non-animated cursors in Microsoft Windows.
Technical details The bitmap image file consists of fixed-size structures as well as variable-size structures appearing in a predetermined sequence. Many different versions of some of these structures can appear in the file, due to the long evolution of this file format. The only differences between ICO and CUR file formats are the bytes used to identify them and the addition of a hotspot in the CUR format header; the hotspot is defined as the pixel offset (in x,y coordinates) from the top-left corner of the cursor image where the user is actually pointing the mouse.
