Information about DOT and PNG file formats

Name DOT PNG
Full name DOT, Microsoft Word Document Template File PNG - Portable Network Graphics
File extension .dot .png
MIME type application/msword image/png
Developed by Microsoft PNG Development Group
Type of format Document lossless bitmap image format
Description The DOT file extension is linked to the word processing application created by Microsoft Word. It is a template format that consists of pre-formatted settings, defining the header or footer of a document, margins, font style and site, and other common formatting styles known from word processing applications. DOT files enable the user to create multiple documents with the exact same formatting, giving them an identical or at least similar look. This is very useful for company correspondence via letters or memos, and often used for invoices. Portable Network Graphics (PNG) is a raster graphics file format that supports lossless data compression. PNG was created as an improved, non-patented replacement for Graphics Interchange Format (GIF), and is the most used lossless image compression format on the Internet. PNG itself does not support animation at all. MNG is an extension to PNG that does; it was designed by members of the PNG Group.
Technical details DOT is primarily associated with the 'Word' program which was developed by the Microsoft Corporation. Some commonly used templates are already included in Microsoft's text processing application, but the user can create and save own ones as well. When opening and editing a DOT file, a copy is created when the user attempts to save the document. Thus, the template file itself, in most cases, stays untouched. PNG supports palette-based images (with palettes of 24-bit RGB or 32-bit RGBA colors), grayscale images (with or without alpha channel), and full-color non-palette-based RGB[A] images (with or without alpha channel). PNG was designed for transferring images on the Internet, not for professional-quality print graphics, and therefore does not support non-RGB color spaces such as CMYK.
