Information about PNG and PCT file formats
|Full name||PNG - Portable Network Graphics||PCT, Apple Macintosh QuickDraw Image|
|Developed by||PNG Development Group||Apple|
|Type of format||lossless bitmap image format||Raster image|
|Description||Portable Network Graphics (PNG) is a raster graphics file format that supports lossless data compression. PNG was created as an improved, non-patented replacement for Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) and is the most used lossless image compression format on the Internet. However, PNG itself does not support animation at all. MNG is an extension to PNG that does. Members of the PNG Group designed it.||PCT files are created using the Apple QuickDraw program. Storing images in a raster as well as PCT files supports a vector format. However, you may never see Apple QuickDraw images saved in this format unless you are using a Windows computer. The most commonly used extension for these images when using a Macintosh computer is PICT.|
|Technical details||PNG supports palette-based images (with palettes of 24-bit RGB or 32-bit RGBA colors), grayscale images (with or without alpha channel), and full-color non-palette-based RGB[A] images (with or without alpha channel). However, PNG was designed for transferring images on the Internet, not for professional-quality print graphics, and therefore does not support non-RGB color spaces such as CMYK.||PCT files have the same specifications as PICT files have, with the difference that they are typically used on Microsoft Windows computers. With the adaptation of PDF by Mac OS X, the PCT and PICT format have been deprecated.|
