Information about WBMP and JPG file formats
|Full name||Wireless Bitmap File Format||JPG - Joint Photographic Experts Group|
|File extension||.wbmp||.jpg, .jpeg, .jpe|
|Developed by||WAP Forum||Joint Photographic Experts Group|
|Type of format||Image File||lossy image format|
|Description||The WBMP file format is a now obsolete file type that was used by early mobile phones to exchange and store images. WBMP files are black and white only. The WBMP format was succeeded by the PNG format for use by WAP mobile phones as this provided colour support. A requirement for a WAP specific image format has been rendered increasingly unnecessary due to the advent of smartphones and their support of a range of image formats.||JPG is a commonly used method of lossy compression for digital images, particularly for those images produced by digital photography. The degree of compression can be adjusted, allowing a selectable tradeoff between storage size and image quality. JPG typically achieves 10:1 compression with little perceptible loss in image quality.|
|Technical details||A .WBMP file is saved in bit format. This means that each pixel represents 1 bit. Each pixel can be black or white. Each WBMP file is comprised of a type field, a header field, a width value, a height value and the data for the image itself.||Image files that employ JPG compression are commonly called "JPG files", and are stored in variants of the JIF image format. Most image capture devices (such as digital cameras) that output JPG are actually creating files in the Exif format, the format that the camera industry has standardized on for metadata interchange.|
